Inter Milan Finishes Sweep With Victory in Champions League

Inter Milan defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final to win the European title, league trophy and domestic cup in the same season for the first time in its history.

Diego Milito scored both goals last night at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid as Inter added the European Cup to its Italian Serie A and Coppa Italia triumphs this year. It’s the sixth club to win European Cup, league and cup championships in a season.

“We’ve all done something historical,” Milito told reporters. “We are exuberant, I don’t think the magnificent achievement has sunk in yet.”

The title is Inter’s third in Europe’s top club competition and the first since back-to-back victories in 1964 and 1965. Manager Jose Mourinho, who’s been linked with a move to Real Madrid next season, becomes the third manager to lead two different clubs to the European Cup.

“He’s a great coach, he’s worked a lot and given the team a new identity,” Milito said of Mourinho, who led Porto to the title in 2004.

Bayern was denied its own treble of championships after winning the German Bundesliga and German Cup titles. Manager Louis van Gaal was also trying to win the European Cup with two different clubs, having led Ajax to the title in 1995.

Inter took the lead in the 34th minute as goalkeeper Julio Cesar’s long clearing kick was headed to Wesley Sneijder by Milito. Sneijder sent a return pass to Milito, who carried the ball into the Bayern area and put a rising shot past goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt.

Milito then struck for his second with 20 minutes left to clinch the victory. Samuel Eto’o sent a pass to Milito, who turned defender Daniel van Buyten toward the inside on the edge of the area, cut back to the outside and fired a shot past Butt.

Mourinho joins Ottmar Hitzfeld, who did it with Dortmund and Bayern, and ex-Feyenoord and Hamburg coach Ernst Happel as the only managers to win the trophy with two different clubs.

Glasgow Celtic in 1967, Ajax in 1972, PSV Eindhoven in 1988, Manchester United in 1999 and Barcelona in 2009 are the other teams to win the European treble.
