May 6 (Bloomberg) -- Anthony Kim will miss 10-12 weeks of the U.S. PGA Tour season after undergoing surgery on his left thumb yesterday, his management agency said.

Kim will miss the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, scheduled for June 17-20, and possibly have to sit out the British Open at St. Andrews from July 15-18. He withdrew from this week’s Players championship, the sport’s richest event, after finishing sixth at last week’s Quail Hollow Championship.

Kim, 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking, had a detached ligament at the base of his left thumb, an injury he said has been bothering him for about 16 months.

He finished fourth at the Masters Tournament last month following a victory in the Houston Open earlier this season.

Before deciding to have surgery, Kim said he was trying to lock up a spot on the U.S. team for the Ryder Cup, scheduled for Oct. 1-3 in Wales. Kim ranks second behind Phil Mickelson in the team standings. The top eight in points plus four captain’s picks make the U.S. team.
