England World Cup Winner Mike Catt to Retire From Playing Rugby

May 4 (Bloomberg) -- England and London Irish player Mike Catt is to retire from playing rugby and will make his final appearance against Northampton on May 8.

Catt, 38, whose positions included fly-half and center, joined London Irish from Bath in 2004. He made 75 appearances for England, including the 2003 World Cup final victory over Australia, and the 2007 defeat to South Africa. He also represented the British and Irish Lions.

Catt will now concentrate on developing a coaching career at his club.

“London Irish has given me the opportunity to make the transition from playing to coaching and the time is right for me to focus full time on that role,” Catt said on the club’s website.

In the past six seasons, South Africa-born Catt made 95 appearances as a fly-half or inside-center for London Irish in domestic and European competitions and scored 99 points, including eight tries, the team said.
