April 28 (Bloomberg) -- The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 in the decisive seventh game to advance to the Western Conference semifinals in the National Hockey League playoffs.
The No. 5 seed Red Wings will play the top-seeded San Jose Sharks in the second round, while the No. 3 seed Vancouver Canucks will face the second-seeded Chicago Blackhawks in the other conference semifinal.
Pavel Datsyuk scored two goals in less than two minutes at the start of the second period to put the Red Wings ahead 2-0. Nicklas Lidstrom also had two goals, while Brad Stuart and Todd Bertuzzi also scored for the victor.
Vernon Fiddler scored for the Coyotes in the second period at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
