Capitals, Bruins Take 3-1 Advantage in First-Round NHL Playoffs

The Washington Capitals scored four third-period goals to beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 and move within one win of the second round of the National Hockey League playoffs.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the second period last night until Alex Ovechkin got his second goal midway through the third period. Teammates Jason Chimera, Mike Knuble and Nicklas Backstrom also scored in the final period for the Capitals at Bell Centre in Montreal.

The Capitals can advance to the next round with a home win tomorrow in the best-of-seven series. Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves as the Capitals won their third consecutive game.

At TD Garden in Boston, Miroslav Satan scored a power-play goal in the second overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

The Bruins rallied in the third period from a 2-0 deficit on goals by David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron. Boston leads the series 3-1 and can advance with a win at Buffalo tomorrow.

Also last night, the Vancouver Canucks rallied three times from one-goal deficits to tie their series with the Los Angeles Kings at two games each.

Henrik Sedin scored with less than three minutes to play at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to break a 4-4 tie and Ryan Kesler got an empty net goal with 17 seconds remaining to give the Canucks a 6-4 win. The teams return to Vancouver for Game 5 tomorrow.
