Imax Box Office Receipts Gain 56% on `Spider-Man 3'

Imax Corp., the operator of giant-screen movie theaters, said box office receipts from Hollywood movies rose 56 percent last year, bolstered by the success of ``Spider-Man 3'' and the latest ``Harry Potter.''

Sales advanced to $145 million, the Mississauga, Ontario-based company said today in a statement. Imax theaters played eight films by large studios, including ``300'' from Warner Bros. and ``Beowulf'' from Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures.

Adding Hollywood films may help attract fans and increase revenue. Analysts predict Imax sales will gain 13 percent to $135 million this year, based on the average of three estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Imax, which has posted a loss in the past five quarters, is installing digital projection systems to add movies this year.

Imax rose 19 cents to $5.57 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Imax has gained 38 percent in the past year.
