Marc Andreessen argues that the writers strike in Hollywood will lead the scribblers to strike out on their own: As he sees it, Hollywood will drop the old-style and confrontational labor arrangements and follow the entrepreneurial model of Silicon Valley. And why not? From a writer’s perspective, the cost of production is laughable and distribution’s free. Still, there’s the issue of building a brand and business model. This is a lot easier for Will Ferrell and other branded luminaries than for most. That’s true too in journalism—where very similar forces are at play.
