Just a day after Wal-Mart announced it's doing movie downloads, Amazon.com one-upped the retail giant with a service that has seemed to me a dead-obvious thing to do: It's teaming with Tivo to let people buy or rent videos on Amazon and download them to their Tivos.

The details are still messy--for example, you can't order Amazon videos through Tivo--and for now it's just a test. But the deal still starts to bridge a yawning gap for millions of us who like to watch television not on our personal computers but on our, um, TVs.
