BMW's Panke Says Camry's Bangle Butt Offers Some Vindication

BMW chairman AG Helmut Panke says he noticed the rear end of the 2007 Toyota Camry right away on the Toyota stand.

BMW chairman AG Helmut Panke says he noticed the rear end of the 2007 Toyota Camry right away on the Toyota stand. "It's the best selling car in the U.S., and I din't think they would take too big a risk if they didn't think it was a good idea," said Panke, pointing to the Camry's rear end, which Panke even referred to as a "Bangle Butt."

That, of course, refers to BMW chief designer Chris Bangle who has been excoriated by some critics since unveiling the 7 Series redesign at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show. The trunk lid protrudes up from the rear, looking as one European scribe put it, like someone dropped a dining room table on the rear end of the car. The 5 Series and 3 Series have since adopted the same rear end styling.
