Despite fears that they would derail, talks on Turkey's accession to the European Union are expected to begin on Oct. 3 as planned. Analyst Kaan Nazli of New York's Eurasia Group consultancy predicts Brussels will launch the long-awaited negotiations on Turkey's accession even though Ankara has refused fresh demands to recognize the Greek Cypriot government first. Normalizing ties with Cyprus could be part of the talks, Nazli says. Cyprus has been divided since Turkey's 1974 invasion. The talks could take a decade -- and may well bog down.
