My colleague Heather Green over at Blogspotting alerts us to some new features at Flickr, acquired a few months ago by Yahoo!. John Battelle at Searchblog has an interesting name for "Interestingness," one of the new features: photorank, clearly a play on Google's PageRank, the ace algorithms that put the search engine on top of the Web heap.

I continue to be amazed at how many new ways the current generation of Web companies manages to make useful new features simply out of what their users are doing on their sites--sometimes just from observing the behavior of those users. I keep thinking of a snowball growing as it rolls down a hill: As new features come out, users do more, creating more data that suggests yet more features. It will be interesting to see how big this snowball will get--and whom it will run over. Any thoughts?
