Apple Lower

L-3 to acquire Titan Corp.; Cognos sees lower results on strong dollar; plus more of Friday's stocks in the news

Apple Computer (AAPL ) loses ground after an independent Web site reported that iPod and most Macintosh computer model shipments may be flat or decline this month and Apple may be overstocked.

L-3 Communications (LLL ) agrees to acquire Titan Corp. (TTN ) for $23.10 cash per share, for a total of about $2.65 billion, including assumed debt.

Cognos Inc. (COGN ) sees first-quarter earnings per share of 21 cents to 23 cents on revenue of $198 million to $200 million. The company says the closing of a fewer larger transactions and to a lesser extent, stronger U.S. dollar impacted results.

Blue Coat Systems (BCSI ) posted 21 cents, vs. 11 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share (GAAP) on 34% higher sales. The company sees 17 cents to 22 cents first-quarter earnings per share (excluding items) on 12% to 15% higher sales. First Albany upgrades to buy from neutral.

Due to lower-than-planned sales thus far in the second quarter, Build-A-Bear Workshop (BBW ) cuts second quarter guidance to 12 cents to 14 cents earnings per share on mid-single digit comparable sales decline. S&P cuts estimates. Earlier today, Citigroup cut to hold from buy.

Take-Two Interactive (TTWO ) posted a 12-cent second-quarter loss, vs. a 22-cent loss on a 45% sales rise. To reflect movement of certain products from the third-quarter to fourth-quarter, it now sees 5-cent to 10-cent third-quarter loss on $205 million to $215 million in sales.

Exelixis Inc. (EXEL ) inks deal with Genentech (DNA ) for the discovery and development of drugs to target cancer, inflammatory diseases, and tissue growth and repair. Exelixis is to get an upfront payment, research and development funding over three years, and certain milestone and royalty payments.

CIBC World upgrades Wynn Resorts (WYNN ) to sector outperform from sector perform. Yesterday the company said Wynn Las Vegas's net gaming revenues for the first 34 days of operations were $64.3 million. S&P says revenues were above plan and keeps hold.

Verifone Holdings (PAY ) posted 15 cents, vs. 2 cents second-quarter earnings per share (GAAP) on a 32% revenue rise.

Plato Learning (TUTR ) posted a 10-cent second-quarter loss, vs. a 14-cent loss as lower operating costs offset a 3% revenue decline.

Iteris Inc. (ITI ) posted 2-cent fourth-quarter loss, vs. 3 cents earnings per share from continuing operations as higher operating costs offset slight sales rise. For fiscal 2006, the company expects sales to increase minimum of 10%, research and development to increase by 25%, and $300,000 to $500,000 SOX costs.

Smithfield Foods (SFD ) posted 76 cents, vs. 63 cents fourth-quarter earnings per share from continuing operations on a 16% sales rise. The company sets a 2 million share buyback.

IRS requests downward adjustments to International Speedway's (ISCA ) tax depreciation expense of about $33 million to $37 million for fiscal ended 1999 and 2000. The company would result in reclassification of about $25 million of tax expense from deferred to current.
