I've found Google's just-outta-beta desktop search tool pretty useful, if not perfect. But Dave Winer makes some pithy arguments against hailing it as a big deal, let alone a blow against the empire. Winer's first criticism: "Most of my work is stored on the net so I can find it where ever I am, so while I needed desktop search a few years ago, Google's came too late to make a difference." I suspect Google Desktop Search will be more appealing to those of us who haven't yet managed to get completely untethered from our PCs. But it just goes to show that beating Microsoft to the punch still may not be good enough.
