I wrote a story this week with the excellent headline (thank you BW Online copy desk), of R.I.P. AT&T. The story basically points out that long-term (I mean really long-term) shareholders in AT&T have enjoyed excellent returns. It also expresses some sentimentality that this iconic American company is being subsumed into SBC.
At least one reader agreed with my sentiments and went so far as to lobby for SBC to adopt the AT&T name. Not a bad idea, I say.
From Ron Wernicke:
"After reading your R.I.P., AT&T story, I just had to respond by saying that AT&T (American Telephone & Telegraph) is an American icon. The company is as American as baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie. In my opinion, what has happened since 1984 is not only wrong, but extremely sad.
Everything SBC is today would have never been possible without AT&T. I strongly feel that all the Baby Bells that are now part of SBC should pay their respects to their mother by naming the new combined company AT&T."
Thanks for writing, Ron!
