Canada's benchmark TSE 300 ended flat, as investors punished stocks with poor earnings results. The TSE added 1.71 points to 7,659.30. JDS Uniphase, Hummingbird and CP Ships Ltd. reported poor earnings visibility. The tech-heavy industrial product sector, as well as the financial services stocks, were the worst performers. Oil/gas and the gold sector were the best performing group. Decliners outpaced advancers by a margin of 142-135.
European markets finished Friday's session with losses after disappointing earnings from U.S. tech companies. In London, the Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index dropped 40.10 points, or 0.77%, to 5,193.00. In France, the Paris CAC 40 lost 23.76 points, or 0.53%, to 4,484.31. Germany's DAX index ended down 13.81 points, or 0.27%, to 5,156.63.
Asian markets ended higher. Japan's Nikkei 225 index added 70.09 points, or 0.70% to 10,144.14. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index added 31.50 points, or 0.29%, to 10,772.96.
