Thomas Weisel reiterated its buy rating on Advanced Micro (AMD ).
Analyst Eric Ross says last year the company came out with Athlon -- a chip that had been competing with Intel's P3, which he says is a good chip except its cap is 1GHz. He notes that Intel's P4 is in development, but thinks the P4 is too big and too fast for today's computers. The P4's price-performance is very low vs. the Athlon chip, according to the analyst, as Athlon's performance is better for most applications. Ross thinks for these reasons, Adanced Micro will gain market share. He notes the company had 19% market share at the end of 2000, and 21.5% at Q1 end.
Ross thinks the shares could rise above 25%, and sees PC sales ramping for the rest of the year. Ross sees $1.45 2001 EPS and $1.90 EPS for 2002. He has $45 target, but says it's a conservative target.
