Producers of DVD movies, sound recordings, and software had been pushing for a ban on devices that circumvent the technologies in their products designed to prevent piracy. On July 17, the House Commerce Committee approved a bill, but turf battles with the Judiciary Committee could stall a House vote. The Senate has passed similar legislation.
