SACREBLEU! THE THREAT OF THE EIFFEL TOWER COMING UNDER U.S. CONTROL set off cries of betrayal in the Paris city council July 7. The Bass brothers and a unit of General Motors' subsidiary GMAC want to buy French bank Credit Foncier, half-owner of a management company with a 70% stake in the tower's operating company. City officials say French law bars the tower from falling into foreign hands. To play it safe, Mayor Jean Tiberi may up Paris' stake in the company that manages the tower to 51%.
