CHRISTOPHER R. HASSETT, CEO of PointCast, has hit upon one of the Internet's most compelling ideas yet--a PC screen saver that receives customized information. Over 1.5 million people downloaded its software in 1996. A December deal giving PointCast a prime spot on Microsoft Web browser screens should bring in lots more. The challenge for racing enthusiast Hassett, 34: going public, maybe this year.
