ALFONSE D'AMATO. WHITEWAter. A match made inevitable by last November's GOP landslide. On May 17, the Senate approved 96 to 3 a measure introduced by Banking Committee Chairman D'Amato (R-N.Y.) creating a special panel to take over the Whitewater probe.
D'Amato will head the investigation, which promises to examine the Clinton Administration's contacts with federal officials involved in the original Whitewater probe as well as the financing of the President's 1990 Arkansas gubernatorial campaign. Senate hearings focusing on the handling of documents in Deputy White House Counsel Vincent Foster's office following his death will resume later this summer.
