In 30 years of working abroad, the State Dept. efforts reported in "Peddlers in Pinstripes" (Government, May 1) provide the best U.S. government assistance I have encountered.
However, the careful credibility and trust built by Joan Spero's team is undermined by imposition of unilateral U.S. government sanctions (e.g., against Iran). Who can believe that his country might not be next if the Great Razorback is displeased or needs votes? Missionary politics and business is a lethal mix. What is an overseas customer to do? Deal elsewhere with a dependable partner, that is what!
