New claims for state unemployment benefits probably stood at 325,000 for the week ended Aug. 20, about equal to their pace in early August. In the week ended July 16, filings jumped to a 24-week high of 390,000, lifted by auto workers temporarily laid off during model changeovers. Claims have come down sharply since then, however.
