There's good reason for many white-collar workers to feel as though they're running a rat race. According to Canon USA Inc., office workers make as many as 21 trips per day to the office filing cabinet, fax, copier, and network computer printer. Now, the Lake Success (N.Y.) business-equipment maker thinks it has a way to save shoe leather.

Its GP55 Digital Imaging System is a series of office copiers that, with special circuit cards, can be turned into fax machines and computer printers and connected to Novell Inc. computer networks. So any worker can copy or fax from the comfort of his or her desktop PC. Unlike other multifunction copiers, which can cost nearly $300,000, Canon customers can buy the modules separately, getting just the features they need. And a fully configured version lists for just $22,420.
