Sears Roebuck agreed on Sept. 2 to pay $8 million to resolve complaints that its Sears Auto Centers cheated customers by making unneeded repairs. Denying any liability or intentional wrongdoing, Sears settled charges by the state of California as well as 19 related class actions.

The agreement calls for Sears to reimburse California $3.5 million for investigative costs, establish a $1.5 million auto-repair training program, and offer affected customers $50 coupons toward purchases at Sears stores. The retailer is prepared to hand out at least 933,000 coupons nationwide.
