Given their industry's endemic problems, it's hardly a surprise that construction companies surveyed by Dun & Bradstreet Corp. in mid-July reported plummeting orders and little hope for an upturn in coming months. Less predictable, however, was the continuing pessimism exhibited by some 1,000 manufacturers also surveyed last month. The manufacturers reported declines in both production levels and overall new orders over the past three months and no rise in export orders. D&B says the survey suggests that "recent small improvements in manufacturing data are not sustainable."
