For some travelers to Moscow, the frustration of waiting hours for international calls will soon come to an end. On July 10, GTE announced plans to provide a phone network in Moscow hotels and business centers to allow individuals to make and receive direct-dial calls.
GTE has entered into a joint venture with the Soviet Communications Ministry to build and operate telephone and fax services linking Moscow to North America, western Europe, and Asia. GTE will put up most of the $5 million to $10 million initial capital investment. The wireless service, scheduled to start in November, will use microwave links to satellites.
