EDF Renewable Energy bought a 96 percent stake in the 175-megawatt Pilot Hill Wind Project from Orion Energy Group LLC and Vision Energy LLC that’s under construction 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Chicago, the San Diego-based company said today in a statement. Terms weren’t disclosed.
The project will power Microsoft’s Chicago data center and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by displacing electricity generated from conventional sources such as coal and natural gas, Microsoft said.
Pilot Hill, formerly known as K4 Wind Farm, is expected to be completed in the first quarter. It will use General Electric Co. and Vestas Wind Systems A/S turbines. Microsoft has another 20-year contract for the output of the 110-megawatt Keechi Wind Project in Texas that’s also slated for completion next year.
