Manchester United Signs Midfielder Herrera from Atletico Bilbao

Manchester United signed Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletico Bilbao on a four-year contract.

The English soccer club triggered a buyout clause in the 24-year-old’s contract earlier this week. He made 128 appearances, scoring 11 times for Bilbao. He has played for the Spanish Under-20, Under-21 and under-23 national teams.

United is trying to overhaul its squad after a disappointing season when it finished seventh and fired manager David Moyes after less than a year in the post. Louis Van Gaal, the Dutch national team coach, will take over after the World Cup ends in Brazil.

Herrara’s contract has an option to extend it for one additional year after the original four-year term ends, the team said today in an e-mailed statement.
