Barclays Plc (BARC) hired Greg Smith from Credit Suisse Group AG as a managing director of its consumer retail team, another new appointment for the London-based firm that’s lost several high-profile employees this year.
Smith will join Barclays in September and head the firm’s Atlanta office, according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg News and confirmed by the bank. Smith has spent the past eight years at Credit Suisse as a consumer retail banker.
Smith joins Gary Antenberg, who left Deutsche Bank AG to become chairman of insurance within the Barclays financial institutions group, and Tom Vandever, who departed Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to help lead that group as a managing director.
The recent hires help Barclays replenish a team that has lost a number of veteran bankers this year, including Paul Parker, global head of mergers and acquisitions, technology banker Stu Francis, and Skip McGee, the bank’s most senior banker in the U.S.
Barclays has advised on several consumer deals this year, including CVS Caremark Corp.’s $2.1 billion acquisition of Coram LLC and Hearthside Food Solutions LLC’s $1.1 billion sale to Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Vestar Capital Partners Inc., according to the memo.
