Former Libyan general Khalifa Haftar, who is fighting Islamist militants in the North African nation, accused Qatar today of trying to kill him.
“It’s proven that a state was behind this action, it’s the state of Qatar,” he told Dubai-based Al Arabiya television in an interview. Haftar, who said the attack was carried out by al-Qaeda-linked Ansar al-Sharia, provided no evidence to back up his assertions.
Nobody was available to comment at the Qatari foreign ministry after office hours. The government usually comments through the official Qatar News Agency.
Three of Haftar’s guards were killed on June 4 in an assassination attempt against him in eastern Libya.
