Skymark’s A380 Delayed as Interior Specifications Don’t Match

Skymark Airlines Inc. (9204), the only Japanese carrier to order Airbus Group NV (AIR) A380s, said the delivery of its superjumbos would be delayed by up to six months as specifications of the plane’s interiors don’t match.

“We ordered interiors from two companies,” Skymark Managing Director Masakazu Arimori told reporters in Tokyo today. “The specifications didn’t match. The parts are being reworked.” Airbus declined to comment.

Skymark was planning to start flights with the superjumbo as early as December, the company had said earlier. Skymark’s first A380 successfully made its maiden flight in April following the completion of airframe assembly and system tests in Toulouse, France, the home of Airbus. The next phase was covering cabin installation and painting at Hamburg, Germany, Airbus said April 8.

The Japanese airline’s announcement follows Qatar Airways Ltd. saying last month that the delivery of its first A380 was delayed as Airbus and the airline agreed to some “fine tuning elements.” Tokyo-based Skymark’s order for six superjumbos, including options, is critical for Airbus to build its footprint in Japan, a market Boeing Co. has dominated as near monopoly for decades.
