Sharapova Wins First Set of French Open Final 6-4 Over Halep

Former French Open champion Maria Sharapova took the first set in her final with Romania’s Simona Halep at Roland Garros in Paris.

The Russian took the set 6-4 against the fourth-ranked Halep in 57 minutes when Halep hit a forehand wide. It was the first set Halep has dropped in the tournament.

Sharapova is going for her fifth major singles title after missing the last five months of 2013 with a right shoulder injury. In 2012, Sharapova won Roland Garros to become only the sixth woman since tennis turned professional in 1968 to complete the career Grand Slam of having won all four majors at least once.
