Cosmos Will Retire Striker Giorgio Chinaglia’s No. 9 Jersey

The New York Cosmos will retire Giorgio Chinaglia’s No. 9, the North American Soccer League team said.

Chinaglia joined the Cosmos in 1976 after playing for Lazio in Italy’s Serie A. He spent 1976-83 with the Cosmos, scoring a league-best 193 goals in 213 games. He led the league in scoring four straight years and was named Most Valuable Player in 1981.

Chinaglia, who died in 2012 at age 65, will be represented at the June 8 ceremony by members of his immediate family, including his son, Giorgia Jr.

Among Chinaglia’s Cosmos teammates were Pele and Carlos Alberto of Brazil and Franz Beckenbauer of Germany.
