American Water Expands in NY, to Add California Utility

American Water Works (AWK) Co., the largest publicly traded water utility in the U.S., announced an agreement to purchase the Lucas Estates Water Co. pending New York Public Service Commission approval to expand in Rochester.

American Water’s California subsidiary also said today it intends to buy the operating assets of Meadowbrook Water Co. of Merced to add 1,650 water connections to its 600,000 customers in the drought-plagued state. Financial terms weren’t given.

Terms also weren’t disclosed in today’s statement from the New York American Water unit that serves about 370,000 people for the upstate New York acquisition. It follows a Feb. 3 deal to purchase the Mt. Ebo water and sewage works in New York.
