IOC Sanctions Latvian Hockey Player After Failed Drugs Test

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has excluded Latvian hockey player Ralfs Freibergs from the Sochi Games after he tested positive for a prohibited substance, it said in an e-mailed statement today.

The IOC said it has withdrawn the athlete’s diploma for finishing in 8th place, and asked the International Ice Hockey Federation “to make appropriate mention of the above in the record of the sports results, and to consider whether it should take any further action.”

The IOC carried out 2,812 doping tests at the Sochi Olympics, the most ever at a winter games.
