Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland waits alongside a bunker during a practice round prior to the start of the 2014 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2014 in Augusta, Georgia.

Today’s Masters Tournament practice round was rained out at Augusta National Golf Club, where golf’s first major event of the year will begin April 10.

It’s the first cancellation of a practice round since 2003, the club said in a statement.

“I was hoping to get out and hit some balls on the range, but never got there because of the weather,” said U.S. PGA Tour player Steve Stricker, who is playing in his 14th Masters.

After allowing fans inside the gates of the private club at 8 a.m. New York time, the gates were closed two hours later and fans were forced to leave. Ticket holders will be refunded in May and guaranteed a chance to buy 2015 practice rounds tickets.

“We are disappointed that our patrons could not enjoy today’s practice round, however safety must be our first concern,” club Chairman Billy Payne said.
