Richard Pitino Leads Minnesota to NIT Championship in New York

The Pitino family got a college basketball championship this season, though not necessarily from the person it expected.

Coach Richard Pitino’s Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated Southern Methodist University 65-63 last night at New York’s Madison Square Garden to win the National Invitation Tournament title.

The victory came six days after his father, Louisville coach Rick Pitino, lost to Kentucky in the regional semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Richard Pitino, 31, was in his first season as coach of Minnesota. SMU is coached by 73-year-old Larry Brown.

Austin Hollins scored 19 points for the winners, including a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 47 seconds remaining in the game.
