Patterson Belknap’s Cleary to Lead Firm: Business of Law

Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP’s employment law head, Lisa E. Cleary, was named co-chairwoman and managing partner of the firm. She succeeds Robert P. LoBue, who was co-chairman and managing partner, and joins William F. Cavanaugh Jr. as co-chairman.

“Lisa has been a longtime leader within the firm,” Cavanaugh said in a statement. “Her deep understanding of our people and our practice will be a great asset as the firm moves forward providing the highest quality legal representation and service to our clients.”

Cleary, who advises corporations and tax-exempt organizations on employment issues, is the third woman to be managing partner of Patterson Belknap. Antonia M. Grumbach was managing partner from 1990 to 1996; Rochelle Korman, from 2002 to 2007.

Pillsbury Winthrop Opens Its Second Texas Office, in Austin

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP opened an Austin office focused on the energy and technology sectors.

Partners Chris McNevin and senior associate Elsa Broeker are in Austin, and partners Elizabeth Zimmer and John Barton have relocated there. Sam Stubbs, managing partner of the Houston office, also will head the Austin office.

“Our vision is to build one of the strongest full-service legal teams in Texas to represent the energy industry and, in particular, the oil and gas sector and all practices touching the energy industry,” Pillsbury Chairman James Rishwain Jr. said in a statement.

Sanford Heisler Adds McKnight & Kennedy Partners in Washington

McKnight & Kennedy LLC, a Washington firm known for its whistle-blower lawsuits, joined with the public interest class-action litigation law firm Sanford Heisler LLP.

H. Vincent McKnight Jr., and Altomease R. Kennedy, former principals of McKnight & Kennedy, each with more than 35 years of litigation experience, join as partners. They focus on General Services Administration procurement matters and have amassed more than $150 million in GSA recoveries, the firm said in a statement.

“Both Vince and Al have deep roots in D.C., and vast experience in litigating employment, personal injury, medical malpractice and False Claims Act matters,” David Sanford, chairman of Sanford Heisler, said in a statement.

McKnight will be the co-chairman of Sanford Heisler’s national whistle-blower practice with Ross Brooks, who was recently promoted to partner in Sanford Heisler’s New York office.

Milbank, Jones Day, Bird & Bird, DLA Piper: Lateral Moves

Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP said that corporate finance lawyer Eric Reimer returned to the firm’s Los Angeles office from O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he was chairman of the corporate finance practice. He was an associate and later senior counsel at Milbank from 1990-1999. Reimer counsels clients on corporate financings, including leveraged acquisitions, credit facilities, and restructuring-related financings.

Louis Mercedes, previously of Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP, joined the Boston office of Jones Day in the private-equity practice.

The Beijing office of K&L Gates LLP added Frank Voon, formerly of Allen & Overy LLP, in its corporate/M&A practice.

Bird & Bird LLP said corporate lawyer Peter Veranneman, joined the Frankfurt and Dusseldorf offices from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He focuses on capital markets and corporate law as well as public and private M&A.

Jeremiah J. Sullivan joined DLA Piper LLP’s corporate and finance practice as a partner in the Boston office. He was previously at Goodwin Procter LLP. Sullivan focuses his practice on M&A, investment and corporate finance transactions.

Sideman & Bancroft LLP added William Taylor and David Fermino in the business-crimes group. Taylor, who specializes in cases involving cybercrimes, data breaches, theft of intellectual property and trade secrets, among other matters, joins the firm in Denver. Fermino, who focuses on white-collar criminal defense and complex criminal and civil appeals matters, joins in San Francisco.

Cozen O’Connor hired commercial litigator William Walsh as a member of the litigation practice in Seattle. He was previously a partner with Corr Cronin Michelson Baumgardner & Preece LLP.

Ashurst LLP appointed three lawyers to its U.S. energy, resources and infrastructure practice including Matthew Neuringer, who joins from Squire Sanders LLP and Katayoun C. Sadeghi, who joins from White & Case LLP. Youju Min who has relocated from the energy, resources and infrastructure team in Ashurst’s Tokyo office, joins them.
