Duke University assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski celebrates after he cut down a piece of the net following the team's win against the Butler Bulldogs during the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship game on April 5, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Duke University assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski has been hired at Marquette University, which ranked sixth nationally in men’s basketball spending at $10.7 million last season.

Wojciechowski, 37, played point guard at Duke from 1994 through 1998 and a year later became a member of coach Mike Krzyzewski’s staff. Wojciechowski was promoted to associate coach of the Blue Devils in 2008.

Wojciechowski replaces Buzz Williams, who took over at Virginia Tech last month after failing to lead Marquette to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament for the first time in his six years at the school. Only Louisville, Duke, Syracuse, Kentucky and the University of California-Los Angeles invested more money in their men’s basketball programs in the 12 months through June, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

“I come from an environment where the expectation is to win, and that is why I chose Marquette,” Wojciechowski said in a statement. “I am particularly impressed with Marquette’s investment in men’s basketball and I’m thrilled to join an institution with so much rich history in both basketball and academic excellence.”

The Golden Eagles had a 17-15 record this season, including a 9-9 mark in the Big East Conference.

Wojciechowski gets his first head-coaching job a year after former Duke assistant Chris Collins took over at Northwestern University, which had a 14-19 record this season.
