Facebook, Google Sued By French Consumer Group for Data Use

A French consumer group has sued Facebook Inc. (FB), Google Inc. (GOOG) and Twitter Inc. (TWTR) for what it calls “abusive and illicit” use of private data.

In an e-mailed statement, UFC-Que Choisir also called on French consumers to beware of the “opaque” manner in which their private data is handled by the three social media sites.

“Not only are you the subject of targeted advertising but your data can be commercially exploited without your agreement,” it said.

UFC-Que Choisir, which has filed a case with the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris, said it presented its concerns to three companies in June last year. The three companies, however, have continued to “collect, modify, conserve and use” the data of its users and their entourage, it said.
