Connecticut Wins NCAA Women’s Tournament Opener by 43 Points

The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team opened defense of its national title with an 87-44 rout of Prairie View A&M in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.

Breanna Stewart had 19 points and 10 rebounds last night in Storrs, Connecticut, as the top-ranked Huskies improved their record to 35-0 and gave coach Geno Auriemma his 92nd NCAA tournament win on his 60th birthday.

UConn, which is seeking a ninth championship, next plays Saint Joseph’s, which beat Georgia 67-57 yesterday.

Fellow No. 1 regional seed South Carolina also won its first-round game yesterday, as did Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Louisiana State, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, West Virginia, Louisville, James Madison, Iowa, Texas A&M and Oregon State.

The women’s Final Four starts April 6 in Nashville, Tennessee, with the championship game on April 8.
