Albany Wins NCAA Opener to Set Up Florida Contest; Wolfpack Win

The University at Albany and North Carolina State University won the opening two games last night in the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s college basketball tournament.

D.J. Evans scored 22 points and Peter Hooley added 20 points as the 16th-seeded Albany Great Danes defeated the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 71-64 in Dayton, Ohio, to advance to a game against No. 1 seed Florida.

It was first NCAA tournament victory in history for Albany (19-14), which earned an automatic berth by winning the American East Conference tournament, after losses in its three previous NCAA games.

In the late game in Dayton, North Carolina State defeated Xavier 74-59 in a battle for a 12th seed and a matchup against No. 5 seed Saint Louis.

T.J. Warren had 25 points for the Wolfpack (22-13). Matt Stainbrook had 19 points for the Musketeers.
