Mozambique’s Ruling Party Chooses Nyussi for October Election

Mozambique’s ruling party said it picked Defense Minister Filipe Nyussi as its presidential nominee for October elections, choosing the favorite of a faction supported by outgoing President Armando Guebuza.

Nyussi, 55, beat former Prime Minister Luisa Diogo, who had been supported by a group including former President Joaquim Chissano. Nyussi won with 135 votes against 61, the electoral commission of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique party, known as Frelimo, said.

“This is our candidate to win,” President Guebuza said after announcing the results.
