Fortum to Test Wave Energy Devices at U.K.’s Wave Hub

Fortum Oyj (FUM1V), Finland’s biggest utility, plans to install wave power devices at a test facility in southwest England.

The company signed an agreement with Wave Hub, a center in Cornwall that allows developers of marine-energy technologies to install their machines for testing in sea conditions, it said today in a statement. The test site connects to the grid.

“This is as much ‘plug and play’ as it gets when it comes to wave power-generation development,” Fortum Chief Technology Officer Heli Antila said.

Wave Hub enables developers of marine energy technologies to assess how their devices perform in real-sea conditions. There are currently no commercial-scale projects in operation.
