Mario Matt of Austria competes during the men's slalom event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games at the Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre on February 22, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

Mario Matt won the men’s ski slalom at the Sochi Winter Games, giving the 34-year-old Austrian his first Olympic victory as his teammate Marcel Hirscher took the silver.

Matt led by 0.45 seconds after his first run, but several of his closest competitors failed to complete their second runs, leaving him a 1.28 second cushion over Hirscher, who was second-fastest in the later session. Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway was third.

Andre Myhrer of Sweden, who was second in the first run, fifth-placed Jean-Baptiste Grange of France and American Ted Ligety, who was sixth after his first attempt, failed to finish the course on their second tries.
