Pork stockpiles in the U.S. climbed 2.9 percent at the end of January from a year earlier, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Warehouses held 623.714 million pounds of pork, the most for any January since record-keeping began in 1915 and up from 606.425 million pounds on Jan. 31, 2013, the agency said today in a report. Inventories rose 12.5 percent from the end of December.
As of Jan. 31, stockpiles of pork bellies, which are cured and sliced to make bacon, surged 137.2 percent from a year earlier to 86.4 million pounds, according to today’s report. Warehouse supplies of ham declined 0.7 percent to 107.7 million pounds.
Chicken-meat inventories at the end of January were 3.4 percent larger than a year earlier at 692.4 million pounds, the USDA said. Beef supplies declined 11.4 percent to 429.3 million pounds during the same period.
