The details emerged after the second lottery-type sale for the 64-game tournament that kicks off in Sao Paulo on June 12. FIFA said it had requests for 3.5 million tickets from 199 countries in the latest sales phase, and allocated 473,000.
“We have a very high demand for tickets,” FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke said today at a press conference in Florianopolis, Brazil. “There’s a very high demand from overseas fans.”
After host nation Brazil, with 906,000 tickets allocated so far, the biggest demand to attend the tournament has come from fans in the U.S., with 125,000 tickets going there. The next biggest buyers are Colombians, with 60,000, Germans with 56,000 and Argentines with 54,000. Fans in England, whose opening match against Italy on June 14 in Manaus is already sold out, got 51,000 tickets so far. The Portugal-U.S. game in Manaus on June 22 is also sold out.
FIFA will start a first-come-first-served sale on March 12 when a further 159,000 tickets will be made available to the general public.
As well as in direct sales to fans, FIFA has allocated tickets to national soccer associations and sponsors and in hospitality packages. About 1 million tickets have yet to be allocated for the tournament.
