The New York Mets signed three-time All-Star relief pitcher Jose Valverde, who has recorded 286 career saves over 11 Major League Baseball seasons, to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.
Valverde, 35, converted all 49 of his save opportunities as the Detroit Tigers’ closer in 2011 and led his league in saves with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007 and the Houston Astros in 2008. Valverde had nine saves for the Tigers last season, when he collected a 5.59 earned run average in 20 relief appearances, and was released on Aug. 7.
