University of California junior defensive lineman Ted Agu has died, the school said. He was 21.
Agu “passed away tragically this morning,” the Berkeley, California, school said on its website without disclosing details or a cause of death. Agu collapsed during a conditioning workout, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
“This is a very difficult time for our football family,” coach Sonny Dykes said in a statement. “Ted was a remarkable young man and a member of this family who was highly respected and loved by his teammates and coaching staff.”
Ted Obinna Agu was born May 8, 1992. His hometown was Bakersfield, California.
Agu, a public health major, was a backup defensive lineman who initially was a non-scholarship player, Last March, Dykes surprised him at a team meeting with the news that he was would be given a scholarship, according to the Mercury News. He had a 3.28 grade point average last fall, the newspaper said.
