Italian Soccer Player Diamanti Joins Chinese Team Evergrande

Italy’s national team soccer player Alessandro Diamanti joined Chinese Super League champion Guangzhou Evergrande, which is coached by Italian World Cup-winning team manager Marcello Lippi.

The 30-year-old former captain of the Serie-A team Bologna signed a three-year contract with a transfer fee of 6.9 million euros ($9.4 million), Guangzhou Evergrande said in a statement today, without disclosing salary details. The Chinese team is owned by developer Evergrande Real Estate Group (3333) Ltd.

Diamanti’s arrival is a “critical piece in the puzzle” for Evergrande to defend the titles of Chinese Super League and AFC Champions League, Lippi said, according to the statement.

Diamanti, who played the Euro Cup and the Confederations Cup for Italy, has represented the nation’s soccer team 17 times.
